Subject: Sleeping Beauty and the Medical Exam

What we did today:
Keziah Huidong is truly such a beautiful child. (Yes, I am a proud mom!) When she is sleeping and peaceful, you get to see one aspect of her beauty. However this child is such a true gem of a girl that she has so many facets…and you never know which one you will get to see next.

This morning we started with official business. Two final requirements before her consulate appointment to apply for her visa – having a visa photo taken and the dreaded medical exam. Mainly, this is a poke and prod appointment to ensure there are no major illnesses. However, all the kids in our group are defined as having a special needs condition so we also had to have our original referrals that defined their condition. The hardest part of this exam was how frightened some of the children became. One little sweetheart wept and couldn’t be consoled as we sat in the waiting room. At only two, she knew that she was in a medical place and was so scared. Keziah Huidong handled most of it just fine. There was just one moment while we waited to enter an exam room where she panicked, kicking and flailing around in my arms. Once we entered, she was fine…charming and enchanting as always.

The three areas we had to visit. Height, weight and vision screening, ENT, and general exam. Keziah Huidong’s height was very close to her previous measurement we had received from the orphanage at almost 44 inches. Her weight, however, was lower. We thought she weighed about 46 lbs, but even with all the eating she has been doing during the last week she only weighed about 37 ½ lbs. She must have been wearing a lot of clothes the last time she was weighed. They also did a short eye chart exam. I know that when we get home she will have a much better exam, but at least she wasn’t color blind and appeared to have good vision out of each eye.

Our biggest challenge happened during her general exam. I had completed the required paperwork where I had to list her “special need”. However, the original referral we received had also listed a “mild developmental delay.” Later updates we received mentioned how well she was doing in school and that there didn’t seem to be any delay affecting her performance. Then all you have to do is meet this little girl and see all that she can do to realize just how WRONG that diagnosis was. Even the doctor who had sat visiting with her during the exam was puzzled. Our guide had to interpret for us, but I explained why I had forgotten to include it on the paperwork. The doctor agreed…after meeting this little enchantress, there is nothing slowing her down.
