Subject: Busy busy first day in China
What we did today:
To help our bodies get over the jet lag of such a long flight, we were kept very busy on our first day in Beijing.
We traveled to the Summer Palace, saw a jade factory and a clossimore factory, had a Chinese style lunch at a lazy-Susan table, visited the Great Wall, and had another Chinese style dinner buffet with some Western foods like French fries.
After having traveled to Beijing for a week in June 2007 with Christopher’s company, this trip is very different. IT’S COLD! The Summer Palace is still incredible but the beauty of the gardens just isn’t the same when the lake is frozen over and the dragon boats are frozen in their docks.
We did visit a different section of the Great Wall than we had on our first trip, but it was very cold and windy. This section had very few steps and primarily steep inclined stone paths, unlike the other section we visited with all stairs. Lara made it half way up before the fear of coming down become too great. Christopher wisely walked in front and coaxed her down by keeping her eyes only on his backpack..."Do NOT look down." It worked! We could have gone up farther if we’d only known. We still had an hour before the group would leave so we camped out in a little shop that had tea and hot chocolate.
Our day was long, and we were just exhausted when we finally walked through the door. Though we need to be packed and ready to fly out to Chongqing on Sunday, we just collapsed into bed.
One of our greatest pleasures has been kind of silly. We have a traveling companion - Flat Stanley. A little girl named Ashley who was also adopted from Fuling asked us to take him along on our trip and send her back pictures of his travels for a school project. We keep trying to get fun shots of Stanley, but really had to protect him from the winds in the Great Wall.
Enjoy the boring scenery pictures. We know that you are all just like us...waiting to meet Keziah!
